What does a tattoo consult really do?

What does a tattoo consult really do?
No really — it’s a step you shouldn’t skip.
A tattoo consultation isn’t just about picking a reference image or deciding on size. It’s where we slow things down and make sure the tattoo you’re dreaming of will actually work on your body — now and years from now.
Swipe through to see how this project came together 👇
Every consult starts with understanding movement and placement. Skin stretches, twists, and settles over time, so the design has to flow with your anatomy, not fight it.
Next comes value and contrast planning. We map where light, mid, and dark tones need to live so the tattoo stays readable and balanced as it heals and ages.
The sketch phase isn’t about copying a photo — it’s about translation. Reference images give us information, but the final design is custom-built for your body, your skin, and the space we’re working with.
This is also where we talk line weight, softness, and detail — what will hold up beautifully long-term and what needs to be adjusted so it doesn’t blur or fade away.
By the time we start tattooing, there are no surprises. The plan is in place. The foundation is solid. The result is intentional, not rushed.
If you’re thinking about a larger project or a thoughtfully planned piece, I’m currently building my Q2 call list (April, May, June).

Consults are where the magic — and the longevity — begins.
